Dear Cadet Graham, The US Navy operates its fleet tugs(T-ATF) , with civilian crews( except 4 navy Techs for classified message traffic) thru the Military Sealift Command. I would think that you are more interested in the Navy Fleet Tugs, which were operated by the Navy, with Navy crews, until the 1990s.Those Fleet Tugs towed anything the Navy owned, with 3000hp and 19 Bollard Tons capacity. The ATFs were mostly built during WW2 for towing, salvage, rescue and fire fighting. Many are still in service with the navies of Mexico, Equador, Argentina, & Colombia. The Fleet Tug I served on shot down 5 Japanese planes in one day in 1945, and is still a fleet tug for the Navy of Equador, 64 years after commissioning, and never laid up in reserve. sincerely, Rodger Dana, NAFTS President, RDana@NAFTS.com
