
Nafts is fortunate to have two authors amongst its membership, Stephen Gagin and Jim Perkins. Stephen Gagin has written two books, both novels, concerning salvage and they are listed below. Jim Perkins has assembled a vast wealth of knowledge loaded with facts and figures about salvage vessels. He has four books listed below.
Stephen Gagin did a TAD stint on the USS Hoist (ARS-40) in the summer of 1979, was the OPs /Supply Officer on the USS Papago (ATF-160) 1980 -1982 and finally the Diving Officer of the USS Jason (AR-8)/OPs Officer at MDSU-1 1982 - 1985. He has written two novels, listed below, both with central settings in the Salvage Navy.

Jim Perkins was in the Coast Guard from 1962 to 1966 becoming a second class Engineman. He served aboard the venerable USCGC Tamaroa WMEC 166, former USS ZUNI ATF 95, for nearly three years before his October 1966 discharge. Tamaroa was featured in the film "The Perfect Storm" and the old hull is currently being restored by Nafts members.

A book about the life and times of the U.S.S. Zuni . There are numerous pictures of her first Navy crew, the 1943 commissioning ceremony and a rare photo of Zuni's near-fatal grounding on Iwo Jima. A detailed account of the death of two crewmen is presented through reproductions of her wartime deck log. Citations earned by her WWII crew have been painstakingly reproduced. After WWII, Zuni was transferred to the U.S. Coast Guard, and renamed Tamaroa (WMEC-166). The former Navy tug served the Coast Guard for 50 years as a search and rescue vessel until retired in 1994. Photographs of Tamaroa's Coast Guard history begin in 1947, including her dry-dock sinking, retirement ceremony and arrival at her final home a museum. |

Historical information about the U.S. Navy ATA's, ATF's, ARS's, ASR's and ATO's - the named tugs which fought in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Read the when and where of how many tugs were built and of two pairs of sister tugs which were sunk within one year of each other. Learn about the heroics of a tug captain who earned a Purple Heart, and detailed accounts of 16 tugs sunk during the war. Several photos of tugs sunk during the war are included (two while sinking). Zuni (ATF-95) came to her rescue, dewatered Reno, then towed her through 490 miles of sub-infested waters. The Captain's Operational Report provides minute-by-minute descriptions of what happened from the time the torpedo hit, until both ships reached safe harbor at Ulithi Atoll, eight days later.
